As a group of dirt-bikers rode rampant throughout San Francisco’s city streets over the weekend, a California Highway Patrol plane circling overhead zeroed in on one especially reckless rider, police said. Ronet Sanidad, 29, of San Francisco, was arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of felony reckless evading, reckless driving, conspiracy to commit a crime and tampering with a vehicle identification number, police said.

He was booked into San Francisco County jail and held Tuesday on $170,000 bail, jail records show.

Though it’s increasingly common in San Francisco to spot packs of bikers, on makeshift motorcycles and the occasional four-wheeler, weaving in and out of traffic with abandon in the city, arrests are rare. Police say they’re reluctant to chase the bikers because of dangers posed to bystanders.

Around 4:45 p.m. Sunday, CHP officers said they spotted a group of 8 to 10 bikers riding through a number of San Francisco neighborhoods, zooming through red lights and riding on sidewalks.

After trying to make an initial stop, officers did not pursue the bikers because of the risk to pedestrians and other drivers, said Officer Vu Williams, a spokesman for the CHP’s San Francisco division.

But the CHP’s aircraft never lost sight of them, Williams said. Sanidad stopped at Gould Street and Paul Avenue, ditched his bike behind a vehicle and tried to crawl under a parked car nearby to hide, Williams said.

Guided by the airplane, CHP officers on the ground surrounded and arrested Sanidad, Williams said.

Williams said investigators don’t believe this pack of riders had anything to do with a March incident, in which a group of dirt-bikers surrounded a driver on Highway 101 near the Cesar Chavez Street exit in San Francisco, before pummeling him to the ground when he got out to check damage the bikers did to his car.

That incident remained under investigation, and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday, Williams said.
